If you’ve ever stood in front of the mirror, thought you were less than perfect and perhaps said any of the following:

“If only my lips were thinner/plumper”

“My hips/bum is too big/small”

I wish I had better hair

My teeth are too crooked

I’ve horrible legs

Why did God give me such an ugly body part?

Indian Folklore tells the following story, of the Peacock; this story is for you if you ticked any of the above.

The story of the Peacock
Why has The Peacock – The most beautiful creature ever created, got the ugliest feet in the world!

When God created the Peacock He was delighted, he said, “this creature is completely perfect in every way, he has beautiful jewel-like colours, exquisite proportions, elegant, graceful. God was so proud, and so was the peacock! He held his head high and strutted in superiority.

However, with the passage of time, God became aware that He was the only one admiring the beauty and perfection of the Peacock.

God was amazed to discover that the Peacock went unnoticed and very quickly realized the bird’s perfection was lacking a foil to showcase his beauty, the creature was too perfect and therefore invisible!

And so God went back to the drawing board;

After some deliberation, God concluded that the bird’s great beauty would need to be reflected by a flaw of equal measure: He gave the Peacock the ugliest feet in the world. The Peacock was not happy (it’s said that his screech is his appalled response every time he sees his feet!).

The beautiful peacock

As the recreated Peacock walked away from God on his graceless, clumsy, colourless feet – heads turned, gasps of awe were heard and the other animals said, “What an exquisitely beautiful creature”. It was agreed, unanimously, the Peacock was, and remains today, the most beautiful creature of the animal Kingdom.

Those who gaze on the Peacock see that he is perfect in every way. “How incredible, said God: “nobody but the peacock notices his feet! And he has discovered a newfound humility and compassion in his imperfection”.

God smiled and was well pleased. He learned his lesson well; when he turned his attention to creating mankind; he remembered the Peacock, and gave all his children unique individual flaws; to highlight our great proportions, elegance, grace and beauty which, in turn, serves to remind us that no one is perfect.

This is the story, as I heard it, many years ago. I love it as much today as I did then. It seems to me, it’s vital to celebrate and embrace our imperfections, for without them we would very likely at best, appear bland and at worst, be invisible!

At risk of being late to the party on this one, it is worth re-stating that there is no cure for a hangover other than not drinking. Much has been written and remains in pop culture regarding remedies for the dreaded hangover. A surprising amount of scientific literature fails to explain the hangover syndrome other than it may be a mild version of severe alcohol withdrawal. Headache, nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, thirst, difficulty with concentration, dizziness and general muscle soreness are all common symptoms. The most extensive review of medical literature in recent past by the British Medical Journal failed to show any convincing evidence of any therapy or dietary supplements that can consistently help the symptoms or help understand precisely why it happens. This year several commercially available products have surfaced that reportedly help cure or treat hangovers. These are entirely unproven claims. Do not waste your money on them.

Understanding a few simple facts that are clear, should be kept in mind any time alcohol is consumed. There are many moving pieces to this puzzle. Limiting your alcohol consumption and drinking responsibly if not abstaining entirely is your best choice. The less alcohol ingested the less likely you are to experience problems. Making an effort to drink plenty of water may be helpful. We know problems arise when people get dehydrated which is a common characteristic of hangovers as well as many other medical conditions. Alcohol is not only a toxin to the liver usually tolerated in reasonable amounts but also acts as a diuretic increasing urination and fluid loss greater than the amount of fluid consumed in the alcoholic beverages. The type of alcohol consumed may increase risk of hangover. Clear distilled spirits such as vodka appear less likely than dark fermented alcohol (wine, beer, or bourbon) to cause a hangover. According to reliable research, congeners that add to the darker color are toxins created in fermentation and play a greater role in the bad side effects. Again, it is worth emphasizing too much alcohol consumed of any type leads to problems.

A safe amount is hard to identify due to many variations in individual metabolism, body weight and composition, medications, general health, gender and age. Besides drinking responsibly, consuming plenty of water before and during the times of alcohol ingestion may be helpful in minimizing the ill effects. Some experts recommend a glass of water for every alcoholic beverage. They also suggest consuming only one alcoholic beverage per hour as a rule of thumb. Use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen or naproxen after drinking seems like it makes sense. However, research has failed to demonstrate any consistent response. Acetaminophen when drinking should be avoided due to its own liver toxicity, which can be magnified in the presence of alcohol.

Drink responsibly. Do not drink and drive. Even small amounts of alcohol impair judgment before you are aware of its effects. Be mindful and pro-active about alcohol consumption. It is the only way to avoid a hangover or worse.

Knowing about wound care treatment is extremely important for each one of us as you or your loved ones may get hurt anytime in daily life. Certain basic knowledge about treating common wounds is very useful, especially when it comes to facing situations when someone has suffered an injury due to an accident on street or cuts and bruises; the victim needs to be taken to a clinic. However, certain elementary treatment can definitively be provided which helps preventing septicemia and other complications later on. Let us discuss a few ways of treating certain common wounds and types of dressings they need.

Wound care treatment is all about bandaging or dressing the wound with the help of dry and wet bandages to protect the wound from infection and further harm.

The first thing that you need to do is disinfect your hands right away. This can be done by washing hands properly with a good soap and putting a pair of gloves on. After you have done so, the next thing you need to do very meticulously is to gather all the things you need for dressing the wound so that you do not miss anything during the process of dressing. All you need is normal (0.9%) saline (please make sure that the expiry date has not passed), 4×4 and 3×3 gauzes, tapes and various sterile applications and a plastic bag.

After you have gathered all these, the actual wound care treatment gets under way. Use a clean surface (a clean piece of cloth or wax paper) and keep all these stuffs together in the order you will need them.
Now, take each of those dry smaller gauzes and fluff them. Note that it is a lot easier to fluff the gauzes rather than when you have poured saline on them. Here you need to be careful not to touch any other thing that is not placed on the wax paper or the piece of cloth.

Now, it’s time to pour the saline water on the fluffed gauzes and on the two small gauzes which are unfolded. After you have poured the water, it is time to unfold them. However, do not ruffle the four or five 4 x 4 gauzes kept on the top as they will form the top layer and keeping them in order will also help you to place them over the wet gauze with much ease in a single piece rather than trying to place each of them discretely. The first stage of wound care treatment is over!

Now, it’s time to wash your hands and put another pair of gloves. Start removing the dressing very slowly and carefully. Put one of the fingers of left hand on the skin and draw out the tape up and away off the skin and simultaneously with the other hand, keep on moving the tape along its edges till the topmost part is off. Repeat the same thing with both the sides and pieces of the tape.

Now, you are into the last part of wound care treatment. Take the inner packing off. However, make sure all the gauzes you had put have been taken out. Drop these used gauzes into the plastic bag after you have rolled the gauzes into a ball along with the gloves. Now it’s time to see the wound bed properly. Make sure there is no sign of infection like redness, swelling, signs of pus formation and so on. Ask the person whether he or she is feeling any acute pain as pain can be a hint of infection. Stroke the surrounding areas of the wound gently to dry them up. Wash your hands and put a fresh pair of gloves on and start redressing. Now take the bundle of small gauzes which are already fluffed and, slowly and carefully fill the wound bed with them one by one. Never pack the wound hard or force the gauze in. Simply guff them back and forth till the wound is filled up completely. Once you have done that put tapes across the gauzes and you are done with the whole process.

Bed mites are microscopic creatures, which live in the warm and moist environment of beds, bedding and pillows. They are found in synthetic fiber bedding, as well as feathered and other natural beddings. Because they are impossible to see, many people are not aware of their existence, and most people do not have any adverse reaction to the presence of bed mites, otherwise known as dust mites.

Dust mites live off the dead skin cells found usually in beds, and they spend their entire lives in this environment. An adult female will lay between 40 and 80 eggs in small clusters. These eggs hatch, and grow to maturity in one month, and then live as adults for another three months. Therefore the reproduction cycle continues, and at all times there are bed mites, eggs, dead mites and faeces present in the bed.

As mentioned previously, the mites hold no danger to most people, but there are many who suffer from mild to severe allergic reactions to the presence of bed mites. These reactions can include hay fever, runny nose and eyes, sneezing, asthma or breathing difficulties, itchy skin and eczema, especially in babies.

To control the population of dust mites, the bed and bedding needs to be cleaned thoroughly.

• Wash your bedding weekly on the hottest cycle possible for that bedding. Hang the bedding to air and dry in the sun. Dust mites do not like dry sunny places.

• Regularly vacuum your pillows and mattress. This helps to control the mites, the dead mites as well as the dead skin which we shed each day, which the mites feed on. Regularly air your duvets and pillows.

• Vacuum the carpet around and under your bed regularly.

• Once every month or so, spray your bed with a solution of 5 parts white vinegar and 1 part water. This kills bed mites. Air the mattress after spraying. The smell of the vinegar disappears once the vinegar evaporates.

• If your allergies are not clearing up, it can be of great use to cover your bed with an allergy cover. This does not remove the mites, but makes it very difficult for them to surface. It also helps o prevent new dead skin from falling into the mattress, and thus the mite population has no more food. Spraying the bed with the vinegar solution and airing it daily, can also help to control the mite population.

By keeping your home well ventilated, clean of dust, and cool, with regulated humidity, you will be able to control the bed mite population to such an extent that they do not cause allergies in your family any more.

People say that plenty of times, but they give up without even trying. It is probably because the idea of being healthy, and leading a healthy lifestyle does sound enticing but the process does not.

But guess what the good news is? It’s really not that hard. You just have to do it enough to where it becomes a habit, a routine. A lot of people say that they are not motivated enough, but you know what? Trust me, after you follow that routine for a few days where it becomes a habit, you will start to see changes. You will feel energized, lighter, cleaner and healthier. That is what is going to motivate you for the rest of your life. There a lot of people trying to lose those pounds and are singing the “I want to be healthy” tune. But the problem is that they are doing it wrong. They are taking pills and going on diets were they keep starving their body off of nutrients. That’s unhealthy and it does not work! It is a temporary fix. Just Temporary! To be healthy and to see permanent results you actually have to lead a healthy lifestyle. This includes mainly two things- eating healthy, and being active. That’s all there is to it. A lot of people think its hard. But seriously it is not. It is all in your mind. They are actually very fun. Once you start doing it and start seeing results, you will actually regret not starting sooner. It is a great feeling. It takes work. I know that. But guess what? You will see results, instantly. Besides, doing something that makes me feel better, and healthier, something that gives me so much more stamina, I am ready to do. You can do it too. Seriously, you can. You can start right now. All you have to do is, stop looking for reasons not to do it. Just do it and don’t give up too easy.

There is this saying, “where there is a will there is a way”. It Never gets old. Push yourself. You are in control of your body. You can make it or break it. Breaking it is easy. You know that too! Making it takes hard work (or at least in the beginning it does), but the results are so much better and life long. You feel better both physically and mentally.

Start right now. I know you can do it. you just have to make the decision and act on it.
